To prepare for the Spirit of Leaves workshop...

  1. Join the Art of Flow at home Facebook group to attend the workshop live.
  2. Spend some time in nature...
  3. Collect fallen sprigs of leaves.
  4. Watch the pre-workshop FB Live Replays here to be uber prepared!

I invite you to wander outdoors in nature; in parks, gardens or the bush and collect fallen leaves and small branches, maybe take photos as well...

I encourage you to sit and observe, soak up the colours, shapes, smells, feelings, sounds of the natural environment.

You will need some eucalypt leaves. A small branch or sprig of leaves works best for this exercise.

If possible, try to collect a branch with larger leaves and a little space between them, as this makes it easier to observe and paint the beautiful negative spaces between the leaves. Very small or dense clusters of leaves can be more difficult for this process. (See example images below).

It can also help to flatten your leaves so they are easier to draw and paint. I like to place them under a board with a few heavy books on top.

If you cannot access any leaves, you can use a photograph as a reference, I will share a few resource images below and more later.

If you don’t live near any eucalypt trees, you are very welcome to use a small branch of leaves from another tree instead.

Preparing for a bird 🐦‍⬛
This year we will consider adding birds into the artworks. A simple silhouette is powerful... You could use an image from a book or from the web to support your vision. A full discussion about the birds here.

This creative workshop is in partnership with Eucalypt Australia, an organisation devoted to the conservation, education and research of Australia’s iconic eucalypt tree.
