PAINTING
DISCOVRY
WEEK
Suggested Materials
This list is intended to support you to get started.
PLEASE do not feel like you need everything!
All you really need is 4 small surfaces to paint on and 3 colours plus white.
4 x small panels, canvas or paper
My top suggestion is:
4 x wooden panels 30 x 30cm each (12" x 12")
OR you could use
4 x paper cut to size 30 x 30 (12" x 12").
Paper needs to be at least 240gsm weight.
OR
4 x small stretched canvases of the same size.
Tissue Paper
White Acid Free tissue paper for collage
You will need approximately 10 - 15 sheets of A3 size.
Acrylic Paints
Whatever paints you already have or can find in the bargain shop are fine.
I will be using acrylic paints and love them because they dry quickly, allowing multiple layers without waiting days for paint to dry.
The Matisse & the Golden brands are my favourite artist quality acrylic paints. It is a bigger expense to buy artist quality paints and not a necessity.
basic starter paint set
You will need these 5 basic colours for our experimentation
- titanium white
- carbon black
- magenta
- phthalo blue
- cadmium yellow
optional extras
- burnt sienna
- burnt umber
- cadmium red
- phthalo green
- ultra marine blue
- fluorescent colours
- and any colours you LOVE!
The Golden Paint brand have a set of high flow transparent colours which are great for beautiful layers of colour.
Gel Medium
We will need some acrylic medium that is a good high quality glue for the collage. I like gel medium.
Gesso is optional
You may like to prime your panels (boards, canvases or paper) with a few coats of gesso. I will demonstrate this in the week leading up to our workshop. I also like to use a very fine sandpaper between coats.
Brushes
-
A few mixed sizes (the size of your thumb and pinkie finger and smaller too... cheapies are fine)
You need one that is round and comes to a small point for fine lines and details.
- I love my rigger brush for very delicate lines.
-
Foam brushes 5cm
-
Sponges, rags, palette knife, fork, stick, skewer, tools for making marks.
- Natural found objects for mark making and stamping - leaves & twigs etc.
Extra handy things
- Palette
- Water containers
- PAPER TOWEL
- Water Spray Bottle
- A hairdryer or heater (if you're in a cold climate)
And that is everything you will need!
